what to wear

Finding the right clothing for family photos can be stressful but with a few guidelines, you will know how to dress yourself and your entire family for a timeless and classic look.

Coordinate but don’t match.
Pick about 2 to 3 colors and carry them throughout your family’s outfits, using these tones in clothing, accessories like necklaces, ties and scarves. Ideally, your outfits will coordinate on some level, giving your portrait a cohesive look while still showing off the individual personalities and styles of your family members.
Keep in mind with some DON’Ts:
*Don’t wear clothing with logos or wording that is highly visible
*Say no to cartoon characters on your little one’s outfit.
*Don’t wear all white or all black clothing!
*Avoid loud patterns and graphics
*Avoid too much exposed skin

Have fun with layers.
Layered clothing looks great in photos and brings more visual appeal and interest to your pictures. Start with a plain shirt then add a sweater, cardigans, vest or jacket. For a guy, wear a long sleeve shirt under a button up with the sleeves rolled up. Layering allows a lot more variety in your shots and poses.

Let your personalities shine.
The purpose of these photos is to hopefully capture each individual as they truly are. Discuss things your family enjoys doing together and bring “props” and accessories that will help compliment who you are.  If your family enjoys playing music together, bring your instruments to your session.  If your family enjoys boating, suggest doing your session on a boat or at the very least near the water.  Bring along items that will represent who each individual is and who your family is collectively.

Bring your personality in with accessories.
Accessories add color and interest to your pictures. Scarves, gloves, hats, jewelry, belts, and hair accessories are all a great way to turn an ordinary photo to an extraordinary photo. Show off your kids’ and your unique personality with accessories!

Don’t Forget Your Feet
Your shoes should follow the same color scheme as the rest of your outfit. Neutral shoes, such as buff, white, black, or brown are usually a good bet. Bare feet are fun in a beach photo or other very casual shot. Sneakers and athletic shoes do not look flattering on pictures.

Stay Comfortable and Relaxed
No matter what you choose to wear for your family portrait, make sure everyone feels comfortable and relaxed in their clothes. This will lead to beautiful smiles and natural poses, and you’ll end up with a gorgeous family photo you’ll love displaying for many years to come.
